When Jamsetji Tata dreamed of building India's first integrated steel plant in the 1890s, his family and bankers called it madness — India had no coking coal of its own and no modern steel industry. Tata Steel proved them wrong, pouring its first steel in 1912 in Jamshedpur, a city the company built and still operates today. It is now one of the world's most geographically diversified steelmakers, with operations in India, the Netherlands, and the UK, and group revenue exceeding US$30 billion.
The company's modern edge is automotive-grade steel: its Jamshedpur and Kalinganagar plants supply high-strength and galvanized steels to nearly every automaker manufacturing in India, while its Dutch subsidiary is a major European supplier of packaging steel for food cans. It also leads India's push into green steel, with hydrogen-based direct-reduced iron projects under development.
For buyers, Tata Steel combines emerging-market cost position with first-world quality systems — its automotive steels are qualified by global OEMs, and its packaging steels dominate Indian food-can production.
