There is no reliable way to count the TE Connectivity connectors inside the average car, but industry estimates put it in the hundreds — every sensor, control unit, and light module needs one, and TE makes a large share of them. Founded in 1944 in Kyoto, Murata turned a family ceramics business into the quiet giant of electronic components. The scale of its output is staggering: Murata produces over a trillion components a year. Its MLCCs are so central to electronics that the 2018 global MLCC shortage — triggered in part by Murata's capacity reallocation — briefly froze production lines at automakers and phone makers worldwide, an episode that showed how dependent the industry is on one supplier. Beyond capacitors, Murata leads in RF filters for 5G, Li-ion batteries for wearables, and MEMS sensors. Headquartered in Kyoto's Nagaoakakyo district with about 73,000 employees and annual revenue near ¥1.7 trillion, Murata competes with Samsung Electro-Mechanics and TDK, but its combination of materials science and manufacturing precision keeps it the default choice for flagship phones and automotive electronics. Its magnetic expertise also lives on in the magnetic heads and motors inside hard disk drives. Based in Tokyo with about 100,000 employees and annual revenue near ¥2.2 trillion, TDK has transformed itself into a materials science powerhouse — its latest bets include solid-state batteries for wearables, MEMS sensors for automotive and industrial use, and energy storage for data centers. For electronics buyers, TDK is one of the component industry's most diversified suppliers, with deep roots in the materials science that components depend on.

In 1886, Robert Bosch opened a 'Workshop for Precision Mechanics and Electrical Engineering' in Stuttgart — and in 1902 his company invented the high-voltage spark plug, the product that made the gasoline engine practical and Bosch's fortune. What makes Bosch genuinely unusual among global industrial giants is ownership: 94% of the company is held by a charitable foundation, meaning no shareholders demand quarterly profits, and the company famously reinvests most of its earnings. The business spans mobility (fuel injection, braking systems, ADAS sensors, and now EV powertrains), industrial technology (hydraulics, packaging machinery), consumer goods (power tools, home appliances under the Bosch and Siemens brands), and energy & building technology. Bosch is the world's largest automotive supplier, and its common-rail diesel and ESP stability systems became industry standards. With about 420,000 employees — making it one of the world's largest private employers — and annual revenue near €92 billion, Bosch is in the middle of its largest transformation ever: restructuring around electrified mobility and software-defined vehicles. Its foundation ownership lets it make decade-long bets that public competitors cannot, a structural advantage that shows in its willingness to keep investing through downturns.

Omron's name comes from a street in Kyoto — the company took it in 1959 from 'Omon', an old name for the avenue near its headquarters, in the hope of sounding friendlier to Western customers. What the name hides is a precision-automation powerhouse: founder Kazuma Tateishi built his first product, an X-ray timer, in 1933, and Omron has been converting physical signals into electrical ones ever since. Today Omron is one of the world's largest makers of industrial sensors and control components — photoelectric, proximity, and pressure sensors plus PLCs and relays that sit inside factory automation lines worldwide. It is also the global leader in home blood-pressure monitors and a major supplier of automatic ticket gates and healthcare devices, with about 28,000 employees and annual sales near ¥800 billion. The company's unusual trait is its founding philosophy: Tateishi's 'machine that works for the benefit of people' principle pushed Omron into early development of social systems — from automated bank machines to traffic control — decades before 'Industry 4.0' became a buzzword.

Keyence is one of the most profitable manufacturing companies in history — and it makes almost nothing itself. Founded in 1974 in Osaka as a sensor maker, the company outsources all its production to contract manufacturers, keeping only design, sales, and service in-house. That asset-light model produces extraordinary economics: Keyence has operating margins above 50%, a valuation that once made it Japan's most valuable company, and average salaries that are the highest in corporate Japan. The product line centers on factory automation: photoelectric sensors, laser measurement systems, vision systems, barcode readers, and digital microscopes used on production lines worldwide. Its sales model is equally unusual — no distributors, only direct sales engineers who visit factories, demonstrate products on site, and close same-day orders, with prices kept deliberately high (no discounts, ever) because engineers buy on trust in quality. Headquartered in Osaka with only about 11,000 employees and annual revenue near ¥1 trillion (US$6.7 billion), Keyence generates more profit per employee than almost any company on earth. It spends heavily on R&D (its products are often the first of their kind) and carries no debt and massive cash reserves. For manufacturers, Keyence is the premium automation supplier — expensive, but the sensors that factories cannot afford to do without.

JXPCB — the trade name of Shenzhen Xunjiexing Technology — is part of the vast ecosystem that makes Shenzhen the world's hardware capital: fast-turnaround printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturing for electronics companies that need prototypes and small batches in days, not months. The company listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange's STAR Market in 2021, a milestone for the city's army of component suppliers. The business model is speed and flexibility: engineers anywhere in the world upload Gerber files, choose board specifications online, and receive finished boards shipped by express courier within days. JXPCB serves the full spectrum of PCB needs — single- and double-sided boards, multilayer boards, HDI boards, and flexible circuits — for customers in consumer electronics, communications, automotive, and medical devices, including a growing base of overseas clients. With several thousand employees and annual revenue near RMB 5 billion, JXPCB competes in a crowded field that includes dozens of Shenzhen peers, differentiating on quality control, fast delivery, and the convenience of its online ordering platform. For hardware startups and industrial customers, it is one of the go-to suppliers when a design must go from screen to shipped board in record time.

Delta Electronics was founded in 1971 by Bruce Cheng with a single thesis: power conversion could be done more efficiently. Five decades later, the company's switching power supplies — which convert wall current into the precise voltages that electronics need — are inside a significant share of the world's servers, telecom gear, and industrial equipment, and its products claim efficiency records above 97%. Headquartered in Taipei and employing about 80,000 people, Delta is a dominant supplier of power supplies and cooling fans for data centers, and it has become one of the largest providers of EV charging infrastructure globally — its DC fast chargers are deployed by major charging networks in the US, Europe, and Asia. The company also makes industrial automation components, solar inverters, and energy storage systems. Delta's procurement significance is double-edged: as a buyer it consumes huge volumes of semiconductors, magnetics, and aluminum; as a supplier it offers buyers of power components a rare combination of volume pricing, thermal design expertise, and a corporate commitment to energy efficiency that aligns with net-zero procurement targets.

Most of the electricity moving through Europe's power grids travels along cables made by a company most consumers have never heard of: Prysmian. The world's largest cable maker, spun off from Pirelli in 2005 but tracing its roots to 1879, supplies everything from high-voltage submarine interconnectors to the fiber optics behind broadband networks. The group's engineering sweet spot is extreme environments. Its long-distance HVDC submarine cable projects link offshore wind farms to mainland grids, while its aerospace and automotive divisions make lightweight wiring harnesses for planes and electric vehicles. Prysmian operates more than 100 plants across 50 countries, employs roughly 30,000 people, and booked about €15 billion in sales in 2023 — a scale that lets it take on turnkey power-grid projects most rivals cannot finance alone. For industrial buyers, the practical value is qualification: Prysmian's cable systems carry type-testing to IEC and other international standards, which shortens the compliance cycle for projects where a failed cable is not an option. Around 150 million kilometers of its cables have been installed worldwide — enough to circle the Earth several thousand times — and its acquisition of General Cable in 2018 made it the clear number one in North America as well.

Nokia began in 1865 as a pulp mill on the banks of a Finnish river, spent a century making rubber boots and cables, then reinvented itself as a mobile phone giant — and after that phone business was sold in 2014, reinvented itself again as one of the world's largest telecom network equipment makers. Today's Nokia, headquartered in Espoo, employs about 86,000 people and generates roughly €22 billion in annual revenue from 5G radio networks, optical transport, IP routing, and fixed broadband. The 2014 transformation is the most instructive part of the story: rather than chase the consumer hardware it lost, Nokia doubled down on patent-led R&D, licensing its 5G essential patents to virtually every smartphone maker, and now sells network equipment to hundreds of service providers worldwide. Buyers in the carrier and enterprise space choose Nokia for one of two reasons: multi-vendor interoperability — its equipment is designed to coexist with rivals' networks — and the durability of a company that has survived more corporate near-death experiences than almost any tech firm on earth.

Panasonic began in 1918, when 23-year-old Konosuke Matsushita — with only ¥100 in savings — started making bicycle lamps in his Osaka home, working from a tiny rented room with his wife and brother-in-law. The lamp was a hit, and Matsushita's management philosophy — the 'Seven Principles' and his famous 'water tank philosophy' of abundant production — turned the company into Japan's biggest electronics maker and made him known as the 'God of Management'. The modern Panasonic spans consumer electronics (its TV, washing machine, and refrigerator lines), batteries (it is Tesla's long-time battery partner, supplying the cells for its EVs through a joint venture in Nevada), automotive systems (infotainment and cockpit electronics), and B2B solutions (factory automation, HVAC systems, and the 'KAIZEN' consulting arm). Its energy business is now the crown jewel — Panasonic is one of the world's largest lithium-ion battery makers. Headquartered in Osaka with about 240,000 employees and annual revenue near ¥8.4 trillion (US$56 billion), Panasonic has shed its unprofitable consumer businesses and reorganized into a holding company structure, betting on EV batteries, supply chain software, and green energy. For the electronics and automotive industries, Panasonic remains a giant — the company that taught Japan how to manufacture, and now powers the electric car era.

LG Energy Solution is one of the world's largest manufacturers of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage systems, spun off from LG Chem in December 2020. Headquartered in Seoul, South Korea, the company employs about 33,000 people and supplies batteries to automakers including Tesla, General Motors, Hyundai, and Volkswagen. The company operates gigafactories in Korea, China, Poland, the United States, Indonesia, and Canada, producing pouch-type and cylindrical cells with NCMA and LFP chemistries. Its joint ventures — including Ultium Cells with General Motors and BlueOval SK with Ford — anchor North America's emerging EV battery supply chain, while its ESS business delivers grid-scale storage systems worldwide. For buyers in automotive and energy storage, LG Energy Solution is a Tier-1 battery supplier with proven mass-production quality, a global manufacturing footprint, and aggressive investment in next-generation technologies including solid-state and dry-electrode processes.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics began as the component arm of the Samsung empire — the division that made the parts Samsung's own phones, TVs, and cars needed, without having to win any outside customer. That captive start could have kept it small. Instead, SEMCO grew into the world's second-largest maker of multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs), the tiny components that regulate electrical current in virtually every electronic device. The company's crown jewel is its MLCC business: it produces billions of capacitors a month, competing head-to-head with Japan's Murata, and its high-capacity MLCCs are qualified into flagship smartphones and automotive electronics. Beyond capacitors, SEMCO makes camera modules (including the folded zoom modules used in premium phones), semiconductor substrates, and electronic component packages for 5G modules. Based in Suwon, South Korea, with about 27,000 employees and annual revenue near US$7 billion, SEMCO has deliberately reduced its dependence on Samsung: over half its sales now go to outside customers, including Apple and major automakers. For electronics buyers, SEMCO is the classic 'second source' — Murata's closest rival in quality and capacity, and the main alternative when supply tightens.

Infineon's roots run through the entire history of European semiconductors: it began as the semiconductor division of Siemens, was spun off as an independent company in 1999, and is now the world's leading supplier of automotive semiconductors — the chips that manage everything from engine control to airbags to EV power trains. On average, a modern car contains more than a hundred Infineon chips. The company's technical edge is power: Infineon is the global leader in power semiconductors — the devices that switch and convert electrical power — including IGBTs and silicon carbide (SiC) modules that are essential to electric vehicles, solar inverters, wind turbines, and data center power supplies. It also makes the security chips in passports and payment cards, and radar and MEMS sensors for cars and consumer devices. With about 58,000 employees and annual revenue near €16 billion, Infineon has ridden the EV and renewable energy booms to record results, and its new SiC factories in Malaysia and Austria are among the largest power semiconductor investments in Europe. For the auto industry, Infineon is a critical dependency — the kind of supplier whose chips are designed into platforms years before production, and whose capacity constraints can ripple through the entire car market.

Nidec's founder Shigenobu Nagamori likes to say that motors are the future of everything — and he has built a company to prove it. In 1973, at age 28, Nagamori left his job to start a company making small precision motors, betting that brushless DC motor technology would dominate. Today Nidec is the world's largest motor manufacturer, producing more motors than any company in history — billions of units a year. The company's claim to fame was the hard disk drive spindle motor: Nidec captured the overwhelming majority of the global HDD motor market, a near-monopoly that funded expansion into automotive motors, home appliance motors, industrial motors, and robotics. Its motors now power electric power steering, EV traction motors, washing machines, air conditioners, and the fans inside data centers and laptops. With about 100,000 employees and annual revenue near ¥2.3 trillion (US$15 billion), Nidec has grown through an aggressive acquisition strategy — over 100 companies bought since the 1990s — and is now a leading supplier of EV traction motors, targeting the electric vehicle market as its next HDD-style dominance play. For buyers, Nidec's scale means motor costs no rival can match.

In 2011, when CATL was founded in Ningde, a coastal city in Fujian, most of the world had never heard of the company — and electric vehicles were still a niche curiosity. A decade and a half later, CATL is the world's largest EV battery maker, supplying roughly one in every three electric vehicle batteries on the planet, including those in Tesla, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, and nearly every Chinese EV brand. The company's rise is built on technology leadership: its NCM (nickel-cobalt-manganese) and LFP (lithium iron phosphate) cells set the industry's benchmarks for energy density, and its CTP (cell-to-pack) and Kirin battery technologies squeeze more range into less space. CATL also leads in sodium-ion batteries and is developing solid-state cells — the technology most experts expect to define the next decade. With about 110,000 employees and annual revenue near ¥400 billion (US$55 billion), CATL has globalized rapidly: factories in Germany and Hungary serve European automakers, a plant in Indonesia serves the nickel supply chain, and its battery recycling business closes the loop. For automakers, CATL is both indispensable and strategically delicate — the supplier everyone needs and no one wants to depend on entirely.

Kyocera's entire business can be traced to one material decision: in 1959, Kazuo Inamori founded the company in Kyoto to make ceramic insulators for television components — betting that technical ceramics, which resist heat, wear, and electricity in ways metals cannot, would become the quiet backbone of modern industry. The bet paid off beyond imagination. Today Kyocera's ceramics are inside smartphone camera modules, semiconductor packages, automotive sensors, and cutting tools that machine titanium at high speed. Its electronics components division makes the MLCCs, crystal devices, and connectors found in virtually every electronic product, while its document solutions business (printers and multifunction copiers) and solar energy division complete a remarkably diversified portfolio. Kyocera employs about 70,000 people and generates annual revenue near ¥2 trillion. It is also famous in business circles for the Inamori management philosophy — 'do the right thing as a human being' — and for an unusual corporate structure: the company famously has no borrowing, a balance-sheet discipline most industrial firms only dream of.

Embraer was born from a Brazilian government decision in 1969 to build a national aircraft industry from scratch — and it worked. Now the world's third-largest aircraft manufacturer, the company, headquartered in São José dos Campos, employs about 19,000 people and generates roughly US$5 billion in annual revenue from three businesses: commercial aviation (its E-Jets family is the backbone of regional airlines worldwide), executive jets (the Praetor and Phenom lines), and defense (the C-390 military transport and the A-29 Super Tucano). Embraer's commercial strategy is to stay out of direct competition with Boeing and Airbus by dominating the 70-150 seat market, where its E-Jets carry passengers for airlines across the Americas, Europe, and Asia. Its engineering strengths — fly-by-wire controls, fuel efficiency per seat, and short-runway performance — are the same skills its defense division applies to the C-390, which is winning export orders from NATO countries.
