Walk through any modern factory and the yellow robots are hard to miss: FANUC's machines — painted in the company's signature yellow — are among the most recognizable industrial equipment on earth. The company began in 1956 as a Fujitsu subsidiary developing numerical control, spun off as FANUC in 1972, and grew its yellow robot army into the world's largest supplier of industrial robots, with over a million units installed worldwide. FANUC's dominance runs deeper than robots: it is also the global leader in CNC (computer numerical control) systems, the brains inside most machine tools, and in servo motors and spindle drives. Its robot lineup covers everything from 0.5 kg handling robots for electronics assembly to the massive M-2000iA that moves 2.3 tonnes, plus collaborative robots (CR series) that work safely alongside humans. The company's business model is famously cash-generative and famously frugal: headquartered at the foot of Mount Fuji in Oshino, Yamanashi, with about 8,000 employees and annual revenue near ¥800 billion, FANUC maintains profit margins most manufacturers only dream of, and its balance sheet holds massive cash reserves. For factory builders, FANUC's appeal is total integration — CNC, robots, and software that talk to each other natively.

ABB was born from one of the boldest mergers in industrial history: in 1988, Sweden's ASEA and Switzerland's Brown, Boveri & Cie — two century-old electrical engineering rivals — combined to form ASEA Brown Boveri, creating a company that could serve utilities and industry on both sides of the Atlantic with a single product range. The merger became a template for cross-border consolidation that the rest of European industry would copy for decades. Today ABB is organized around electrification, motion, process automation, and robotics & discrete automation. Its product range is enormous: switchgear and distribution equipment that keep power grids stable, motors and drives that run pumps and conveyors, the industrial robots that assemble cars and electronics, and the process control systems that run chemical plants and mines. The company's ACS drives and IRB robot lines are industry standards. With about 105,000 employees and annual revenue near US$32 billion, ABB has restructured repeatedly — selling its power grid business to Hitachi in 2020 to sharpen focus on automation and electrification. Yaskawa didn't just build automation equipment — it invented the word for the field. In 1969, the Japanese company coined 'mechatronics' (mecha-nics plus elec-tronics) to describe its own technology direction, and the term became the global name for the fusion of mechanical and electronic engineering. Founded in 1915 in Kitakyushu, Yaskawa is now the world's largest supplier of servo motors and one of the 'big four' industrial robot makers. The company's core products are the motion-control systems that make machines move precisely: servo motors, servo drives, and motion controllers that are industry standards in machine tools, semiconductor equipment, and packaging lines. Its MOTOMAN industrial robots — including the famous 'Yaskawa robots dance' demonstrations — weld, assemble, and handle parts in factories worldwide, and its AC drives control the motors on everything from cranes to conveyors. With about 18,000 employees and annual revenue near ¥600 billion, Yaskawa supplies the automation backbone of factories across Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Its robots and servos are also the enabling technology for the collaborative robots and human-robot coexistence trend — the direction the factory floor is headed, and the direction Yaskawa has been pushing since it named the field half a century ago.

Mitsubishi Electric was carved out of one of Japan's oldest corporate empires in 1921, when the Mitsubishi shipyard's electrical equipment division was spun off as an independent company. The Mitsubishi name — three diamonds, chosen by founder Yataro Iwasaki in 1870 — carried enormous weight, and the new company used it to build everything from heavy electrical machinery to the world's best-selling air conditioners. The company's business spans five pillars: energy & industrial systems (generators, transformers, and factory automation), building systems (its air conditioners — the global market leader in split-type ACs under brands like Mr. Slim — and elevators), mobility (car electronics, train systems, and the automotive alternators and starters that go into millions of vehicles), and semiconductor & devices (power modules for EVs and industrial drives). Its factory automation division competes head-to-head with Fanuc and Siemens in robot controllers. Headquartered in Tokyo with about 150,000 employees and annual revenue near ¥5 trillion (US$33 billion), Mitsubishi Electric is a pillar of Japan's keiretsu system, sourcing and selling within the Mitsubishi network while competing globally. Its sustainability push — 'Environmental Vision 2050' — targets carbon neutrality through energy-efficient air conditioning and grid technologies.
