Every CNC machine tool, every semiconductor lithography stage, every robotic arm owes a debt to THK: the company invented the LM Guide in 1972, the linear motion guide that replaced sliding friction with rolling elements and made precise, high-speed linear movement possible. Before that invention, moving a machine axis smoothly and accurately was slow, expensive, and maintenance-heavy. THK's bet on a product category it basically created paid off: it remains the global leader in linear motion systems, with a dominant share of the LM guide market. Its components move the stages of lithography machines, the axes of machine tools, the carriages of injection molding robots, and the gantries of large-format 3D printers — anywhere that needs nanometer-level repeatability. Based in Tokyo with about 17,000 employees and annual revenue near ¥360 billion, THK also produces ball screws, actuators, and a newer line of miniaturized guides for medical and semiconductor equipment. For machine builders, THK is often the default spec: engineers design around its catalogs before competitors' parts are even considered.
