Panasonic began in 1918, when 23-year-old Konosuke Matsushita — with only ¥100 in savings — started making bicycle lamps in his Osaka home, working from a tiny rented room with his wife and brother-in-law. The lamp was a hit, and Matsushita's management philosophy — the 'Seven Principles' and his famous 'water tank philosophy' of abundant production — turned the company into Japan's biggest electronics maker and made him known as the 'God of Management'. Midea's origin story is a Chinese manufacturing legend: in 1968, founder He Xiangjian and 22 neighbors started a workshop in Shunde, Guangdong, making plastic bottle caps. Five decades later that workshop is the world's largest home appliance maker by revenue — and, through its majority stake in German robot maker KUKA, a major player in industrial automation. The company's appliance empire spans air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, kitchen appliances, and robot vacuums under the Midea brand and the acquired Toshiba home appliance brand. Midea's industrial arm is the differentiator most consumers never see: through KUKA it sells industrial robots and automation systems to factories worldwide, and its own plants are among the most automated appliance factories on earth. Few companies anywhere are as single-mindedly dominant in one product as Gree Electric is in room air conditioners: the Zhuhai-based company is the world's largest residential AC maker by volume, selling more than 20 million units a year. Founded in 1991 (with roots in a 1985 municipal factory), Gree rode China's air-conditioning boom to become a ¥200-billion-revenue industrial heavyweight. What separates Gree from mere assemblers is vertical integration: it makes its own compressors, motors, and controllers through subsidiary Gree Compressor, giving it cost control and component quality that rivals who buy from third parties cannot match. Its Gree Tower and Kinghome lines are household names across China, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, and its commercial HVAC equipment cools many of China's airports and data centers. With about 82,000 employees, Gree has also pushed into smart devices, CNC machine tools, and industrial robots through its intelligent equipment division — a diversification aimed at reducing its dependence on the appliance cycle. For distributors, Gree remains what it has always been: the highest-volume air-conditioner supplier in the world, with the factory scale to back it up.

Haier's transformation is a management legend: in 1985, new director Zhang Ruimin took a sledgehammer to 76 defective refrigerators and ordered his workers to destroy them — a dramatic declaration that quality, not quantity, would define the company. The Qingdao-based maker of refrigerators went on to become the world's largest home appliance brand, and Zhang's later experiments in management — breaking the company into thousands of self-managed micro-enterprises under the 'RenDanHeYi' (人单合一, 'people and orders integrated') model — made Haier a case study taught at Harvard. The group's portfolio spans refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, and kitchen appliances under the Haier brand, plus the GE Appliances business it acquired from General Electric in 2016 and the Fisher & Paykel brand from New Zealand. For the appliance industry, Haier is the Chinese challenger that bought American and New Zealand heritage brands and turned them around — while reinventing how a giant company is organized.

Walk into a kitchen appliance store in Europe and the odds of seeing the Beko logo on a refrigerator are high — Beko is the consumer brand of Arçelik, a Turkish group that has become one of Europe's largest home appliance manufacturers. Founded in 1955 by the Koç family, Arçelik employs about 40,000 people, produces tens of millions of appliances a year, and owns brands including Beko and Grundig. The company's strategy is manufacturing scale in Turkey plus localized plants across Europe, Asia, and Africa — it operates close to 30 production facilities, and its R&D centers in Turkey, the UK, China, and South Korea file hundreds of patents a year. Electrolux Group is a Swedish home appliance manufacturer and one of the world's largest, selling more than 60 million products annually in around 120 markets. Founded in 1919, the company has grown through decades of acquisitions into a portfolio of brands including Electrolux, Frigidaire, AEG and Zanussi, covering cooking, laundry, refrigeration, dishwashing and floor care.
