Sinochem Holdings is the product of China's biggest state-enterprise merger in decades: in 2021, Sinochem Group and ChemChina — two of China's largest chemical and trading conglomerates — were merged into a single entity with more than US$170 billion in annual revenue, creating one of the world's largest chemical companies. The combination united Sinochem's trading and energy logistics strength with ChemChina's industrial assets, including the Swiss agrochemical giant Syngenta, acquired in 2017. The merged group's business spans four pillars: energy (oil trading, storage, and refining), chemicals (basic chemicals, rubber, and additives), agriculture (seeds, crop protection, and fertilizers via Syngenta and its domestic units), and finance & real estate. Its agriculture business makes it one of the world's largest crop protection and seed companies — a strategic asset in China's food security policy. Headquartered in Beijing with more than 200,000 employees, Sinochem Holdings operates in over 100 countries. Its creation was explicitly strategic: Beijing wants national champions in key industries, and Sinochem — with its combination of trading networks, chemical plants, and global agribusiness — is designed to be China's answer to companies like BASF, Bayer, and the global commodity traders.

BOE — originally Beijing Oriental Electronics — was a struggling state-owned tube maker when it made one of the boldest bets in Chinese industrial history: in 2003, it acquired Hyundai's liquid crystal display business and began building the factories that would take on Samsung and LG in the world's most capital-intensive industry. The strategy was brutally simple — invest through downturns when rivals retreat, build the next-generation factory, and repeat — and it made BOE the world's largest display panel maker. The company now produces over a quarter of the world's LCD panels, from smartphone screens and laptop displays to 8K TVs and the flexible OLED panels used in foldable phones. Its factories in Beijing, Hefei, Chengdu, and elsewhere represent tens of billions of dollars of investment, and its display technology is inside products from virtually every major electronics brand. BOE is also expanding into IoT, smart healthcare, and semiconductor-related businesses. With about 90,000 employees and annual revenue near RMB 180 billion (US$25 billion), BOE's counter-cyclical strategy — spending billions on new fabs exactly when the industry is in downturn — has repeatedly crushed the profit cycles of its competitors. For the display industry, BOE is the reason China dominates LCD manufacturing today — the company that turned a state-supported gamble into global market leadership.

Lenovo's defining moment came in 2005, when the Chinese PC maker — then known as Legend — bought IBM's personal computer division for US$1.75 billion, a 'snake swallowing an elephant' deal that stunned the tech world. The acquisition brought the iconic ThinkPad brand and IBM's enterprise customers, and overnight turned a Chinese company into a global PC player. Seventeen years later, Lenovo is the world's largest PC maker. The business spans four groups: intelligent devices (ThinkPad and Yoga laptops, IdeaPad consumer PCs, and Motorola smartphones), infrastructure solutions (servers, storage, and networking — its ThinkSystem servers power data centers worldwide), solutions & services (IT services and managed infrastructure), and its new bet on AI infrastructure, including servers packed with Nvidia GPUs. Its factories use the 'global-local' model — manufacturing in China, Mexico, India, and Hungary to serve regional markets. Headquartered in Beijing (with operational HQ in Morrisville, North Carolina) and listed in Hong Kong, Lenovo employs about 75,000 people and generates annual revenue near US$60 billion. For the PC industry, Lenovo is the volume leader that survived the market's decline by diversifying into enterprise IT — the company that bought IBM's PC business and then, in 2014, IBM's x86 server business too.
