Flex was founded in 1969 in Silicon Valley — before most of its current customers existed — as a small contract manufacturer named Flextronics, betting that electronics companies would rather rent factories than own them. That bet created an industry: today Flex is one of the world's two largest electronics manufacturing services (EMS) companies, assembling products for clients that range from Fortune 500 tech giants to medical device startups.
The scale is hard to grasp: Flex operates dozens of factories across 30+ countries, employing roughly 170,000 people, and produces everything from smartphone components and data center hardware to insulin pumps, automotive electronics, and industrial equipment. Its 'sketch to scale' model means a customer can bring a napkin drawing and leave with a product shipping in millions of units — Flex handles design, supply chain, manufacturing, and aftermarket repair.
Headquartered in Austin, Texas (its legal home is Singapore), Flex generates annual revenue near US$26 billion. The company has repeatedly reinvented its own business, spinning off its component business and its Nextracker solar division, and now focuses on higher-value 'advanced regions' like healthcare, automotive, and data center infrastructure — the segments where manufacturing complexity rewards a partner who has seen it all.
