Fortescue is one of the world's largest iron ore producers and, under its rebranding from Fortescue Metals Group in 2023, a company betting its future on green hydrogen and renewable energy. Founded in 2003 by Australian mining magnate Andrew Forrest, the company is headquartered in Perth, Western Australia, employs about 12,000 people, and ships roughly 190 million tonnes of iron ore per year — about a fifth of Australia's total exports.\n\nFortescue's iron ore operations in the Pilbara region include the Chichester and Solomon hubs and the Eliwana mine, feeding a private 620-kilometer railway and the Herb Elliott Port at Port Hedland, one of the world's largest iron ore export terminals. The company's energy arm, Fortescue Energy, is executing some of the largest green hydrogen projects on earth — including the 40-gigawatt Western Green Energy Hub in Western Australia — and has contracted to build hydrogen electrolyzers and ammonia plants across the US, Brazil, and Africa, alongside a fleet of zero-emission mining trucks developed in-house.\n\nFor mining-equipment and energy-technology suppliers, Fortescue is a high-volume buyer of trucks, excavators, and rail components, and one of the few mining companies actively manufacturing its own green-technology equipment, creating unusual partnership opportunities for hydrogen and battery supply chains.
