In 1978, a Melbourne surgeon named Graeme Clark implanted the world's first multi-channel cochlear implant, and three years later Cochlear was founded to commercialize it. Half a century on, the company dominates its niche: roughly 70% of the world's cochlear implant recipients use a Cochlear device, and hundreds of thousands of people have been implanted worldwide. This is a precision-electronics business disguised as a medical device company. Each implant is a hermetically sealed titanium package containing a processor, electrodes threaded into the inner ear, and software that maps sound into electrical pulses — a product with an expected in-body life of decades and one of the strictest quality regimes in manufacturing. Cochlear employs about 4,700 people, mostly in Sydney, with R&D hubs in the US, Sweden, and Belgium. It is a small-market leader in the best sense: competition exists, but the surgical teams, audiologists, and implant centers are so embedded in Cochlear's ecosystem that switching costs are enormous. For distributors, the lesson is simple — this is a company you partner with for decades, not quarters.
