Yara's origin story is one of the great chemistry breakthroughs of the industrial age: in 1905, physicists Kristian Birkeland and Sam Eyde figured out how to fix nitrogen from the air using an electric arc — a process that required so much power they built Norway's first hydroelectric plants to feed it. That company, Norsk Hydro, later spun off its fertilizer division as Yara, now the world's largest nitrogen fertilizer producer with about 17,000 employees and annual sales near US$15 billion. Modern Yara is less about arc furnaces and more about precision agriculture: its crop nutrition programs combine NPK fertilizers, micronutrients, and digital tools that tell farmers exactly what a field needs, reducing over-application. The company also runs a large ammonia shipping fleet and is a pioneer in green ammonia — its Yara Birkeland, an autonomous, zero-emission container ship, began commercial operations in 2022. For procurement, Yara matters in two supply chains: agricultural inputs (urea, nitrates, NPK blends) and industrial ammonia used in everything from explosives to semiconductor fabs and emissions-control systems.

Nutrien is the world's largest provider of crop inputs and services, created in 2018 through the merger of Canada's PotashCorp and Agrium. Headquartered in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, the company employs about 23,000 people and generates annual revenue of roughly US$29 billion from potash, nitrogen, phosphate, and a vast agricultural retail network spanning North America, South America, and Australia.\n\nNutrien operates the world's largest potash mine network in Saskatchewan — the richest potash deposits on earth — with annual capacity of about 18 million tonnes, and produces nitrogen fertilizers at plants in Canada, the United States, and Trinidad, and phosphate at facilities in the United States and Brazil. Its retail division, with more than 2,000 locations, distributes fertilizers, crop protection, and seeds directly to farmers, making Nutrien the closest thing agriculture has to an integrated input monopoly.\n\nFor agricultural and industrial buyers, Nutrien is the benchmark supplier of potash (MOP) and nitrogen products, with large, reliable export volumes through Canadian Pacific and West Coast ports, and its digital platform, Nutrien Ag Solutions, is building one of agriculture's largest data networks linking input supply to precision farming.
