Christian Stöhr GmbH & Co. KG, founded in 1925 and based in Marktrodach, Germany, produces HEL-X carrier material for biological wastewater treatment in moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBR). The filling bodies are also used in IFAS systems and as clusters in trickling filters. Applications include municipal and industrial wastewater plants, aquaculture and aquaponics, koi and ornamental fish keeping, and biogas plants. The helix or spiral shape gives the majority of the range its name; the HEL-X FLAKE biochip is an exception. The bodies are permeable from all sides, reducing the energy needed for movement while supplying the biofilm with oxygen and nutrients. Production takes place in Germany.
